FDIC Insurance Coverage Permanently Increased
On 7/21/10, President Obama signed a bill to permanently raise
the current standard maximum deposit insurance to $250,000. The FDIC
insurance coverage limit applies per depositor, per insured
depository institution for each account ownership category. If you
have questions about your deposit coverage, see a United Bank
banker, or visit www.fdic.gov
and use the Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) for more
information.
Authorization for ATM and Debit Card Transactions
Congress has recently created new rules governing overdraft
protection programs that go into effect on July 1, 2010. After this
date, United Bank can no longer cover your ATM and everyday debit card
transactions when there are insufficient funds in your account without
your authorization to do so. Overdraft protection is a safety net for
those times when life doesn’t go according to plan. While most of our
customers never need to use overdraft protection, the safety net offers
peace of mind for those inadvertent mistakes that we all can make.
For more information, read
more. If you want United Bank to authorize and pay overdrafts
on ATM and everyday debit card transactions, call us at 770-567-7211 or
complete this
online form.

Tips for Businesses Accepting Credit and Debit Cards
If you accept credit cards and debit cards from your customers, you are
familiar with the varying costs of handling those transactions. Here are
a few tips to avoid downgrades:
- When accepting mail or telephone orders, authorize every sale
on the order date. Authorizations are valid for a specific number
of days: Visa and MasterCard, up to 7 days. Discover, up to 30
days. Merchandise must be shipped and sales must be settled within
these time frames or the authorization will expire.
- In the retail environment, train your sales associates to
swipe cards whenever possible, rather than hand keying
transactions. Swiped transactions cost you less for processing.
United Bank’s Business Services can help you avoid unnecessary
additional fees and downgrades. Keep more money in your pocket,
and use the best practices of card acceptance. Contact us at
770-567-7211 for more information.
Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) of 2006
The UIGEA, signed into law in 2006, prohibits any person engaged
in the business of betting or wagering (as defined in the Act) from
knowingly accepting payments in connection with the participation of
another person in unlawful internet gambling. The Department of
Treasury and the Federal Reserve Board have issued a joint final
rule, Regulation GG, to implement this Act.
As defined in Regulation GG, unlawful Internet gambling means to
“place, receive or otherwise knowingly transmit a bet or wager by
any means which involves the use, at least in part, of the internet
where such bet or wager is unlawful under any applicable Federal or
State law in the State or Tribal lands in which the bet or wager is
initiated, received or otherwise made”.
As a commercial customer of United Bank, these restricted
transactions are prohibited from being processed through any
business account or banking relationship with us. If you do engage
in an Internet gambling business and open a new account with us, we
will ask that you provide evidence of your legal capacity to do so.
